It’s a hard pill to swallow, but while sustainability remains an important issue for consumers, the pressure of economic uncertainty, soaring bills, changes people’s priorities and is driving people towards cheaper options.

Closure of a pioneering zero waste store in Woking, Bare + Fair, made front page headline news locally.

Its owner, Mel Hemmings, winner of CREST21 Sustainability Hero Award who continues to be a stalwart of CREST Awards, announced that she could no longer afford the financial and market pressures on her town centre shop and online business.

Indomitable to the end she has set her customers the challenge of meeting a target of 100,000 containers refilled and reused by her customers since Bare + Fair launched until its closure due on 24 June. (Ecowise will be bringing you a video interview with Mel in our July issue.)
